Stop Reading the Sound
知覚編の卒業 ― 音が聞き取れない本当の理由は、耳が悪いからじゃない。あなたは音を「聞いて」いなかった。心の中で、つづりとページを「読んで」いた。文字を捨てて、音そのものに乗る。その瞬間、流れがほどける。
Here is a strange question. When you listen to English, are you actually listening? A learner I know spent years sure that he was. Then one day he caught himself doing something else entirely. The audio was playing — but in his head, he was silently reading. He saw the words on a page. He was listening with his eyes.

This is the deepest habit Japanese school builds. You learned every word as spelling first. So now, when sound comes in, your mind quietly turns it back into letters. It pictures the page. And then it does the worst thing of all: it cuts the stream where the written words and grammar say to cut — neat little boxes, one word, one space, like slash-reading on paper.
But real speech does not live on a page. You learned this in the last four lessons. Speech is chunked by breath. Words link into each other. Small words go weak and almost vanish. And the whole thing rides on a beat. None of that matches the spelling. None of it.
So a quiet war begins. Your text-mind expects neat boxes; the real sound arrives linked, weak, and beaten. The two fight — and the text-mind loses every time. That is why the small words seem to disappear. That is why the boundaries feel wrong. That is why nothing connects. You are not failing to hear. You are reading something that was never written down.
Just drop the page
So what is the cure? It is almost embarrassing. You do not need a better ear. You do not need faster grammar. You just stop reading the sound.
Stop trying to map the sound onto letters. Stop building the page in your head. Let the sound itself be the thing — its chunks, its links, its weak little words, its beat. That is all there is. There is nothing underneath it to decode. The sound is not a clue pointing to the "real" written words. The sound is the language.
The learner I told you about — the day he finally dropped the page, listening opened up. Not slowly. At once. The small words came back. The boundaries fell into the right places. The stream clicked into place. He had not gained a new skill that morning. He had only stopped doing the one thing that was blocking everything: reading with his ears.

掟 RULES TO CITE
- 音声が流れているあいだ、頭の中でつづりやページを思い浮かべない。文字を読むのをやめる。
- 文字や文法の切れ目で切らない。実際の音は、息・つながり・弱化・拍で切れる(1〜4章)。音の切れ目に従う。
- 目を閉じて聞く。テキストなしで。音そのものを、音のまま受け取る。
典拠 SOURCES
- 文字を覚えてから音を学んだ学習者は、聞くとき無意識に正書法(つづり)を呼び出す。これが実音とずれ、処理の負荷になる。これを正書法干渉(orthographic interference)と呼ぶ。
- 熟達したリスニングは、文字を介さず音から直接、意味のかたまりへ写像する。シャドーイングは、この「音→意味」の直結回路を、目を使わず鍛える代表的な手法。
